Considering Headship, part 2

1. be clear what your vision is for the school you would lead and ensure you can articulate it clearly and concisely

2. have a viewpoint of current issues in education and future developments

3.  keep up to date with ICT initiatives and key areas in education

4. learn all you can from different styles and approaches to leadership

5. make sure you have led a number of whole school initiatives and seek to gain experience in as wide a range of areas as you can, e.g: school improvement and raising standards, data tracking, whole school finances & budgeting and buildings & grounds, working with governors or attending some governors’ meetings, policy writing, facilitating cover, timetabling, working with parents/PTA and the community, health & safety and writing & reviewing risk assessments, pastoral care, marketing and publicity, leading INSET, leading a residential educational visit, mentoring and/or coaching colleagues, lesson observations and appraisal or performance management, interviewing new staff, taking whole school assemblies and school committee, awareness and experience with inspection documentation  . . . and so the list goes on .  .  .

6. when situations arise that cause you to question, or spark your curiosity, ask your current Head to share their thoughts and the decision-making process relating to the initiatives/situation
